Abstract

This research proposal is aimed at providing key insights into the impact of social and academic settings on the academic success of Black and White boys. Introduction

The persistent Black-White gap in the achievements level of secondary and university level students has been a matter that has gained paramount importance in the recent periods. The nation's leaders are making an effort to address this issue but every year the “nation's report card” published by the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) is featured as a highlight in the national newspaper due to the drastic nature of the results. According to a study conducted, only 47% of Black male students were able to graduate on time from US high schools in 2008 in comparison to 78% of white male students in the same year (Schott Foundation for Public Education, 2010). This gap has impacted the well-being of children and the personal growth of Black and White boys which has resulted in neighborhoods being split apart and lack in racial harmony.

Problem Statement

In an effort to understand the root causes of the enormous gaps that exist in the Black-White, we need to conduct a thorough analysis of how Black-White boys respond to similar educational environments. We need to examine the role that teachers and families play that affect the educational achievements and well-being of a student. However, the social circles that are maintained by Black and White boys outside of the college have a huge impact on the educational environment and should be discussed. The increase in understanding will uncover the bottleneck in the progress of our Black-White boys and can provide important information to those who want to conduct further studies in this area, and think about it.

Thesis Statement

The gap in achievement exists due to different social and academic perceptions maintained by Black-White guys.

Purpose of study

This explanatory study will be an effort to underpin the major issues that result in an achievement gap between Black and White boys. The primary focus will be to study the impact that social settings and academic environment haves on the student belonging to Black and White backgrounds.

Aims and Objectives

The primary objective of this study is will astutely uncover the issues that serve as a bottleneck in the progress of our Black-White boys.

Moreover, the research also aims to find how social and academic settings impact the well-being and academic progress of students and perceptions of teachers towards Black-White students.

Most importantly, this study is not just an explanatory effort to understand the reasons of Black-White boy's achievements gaps. Meanwhile, it is also an effort to serve as an intellectual insight that helps to bring the Black-White boys in harmony by suggesting ways to improve the academic environment.
