Research Question

What effect does worldview have on the behavior and attitudes of children diagnosed with ADHD participating in a residential behavior treatment center?

Null Hypothesis

Worldview has a significant impact on the behavior and attitudes of children diagnosed with ADHD participating in a residential behavior treatment center.

Sample &Sampling Procedure A Sample of 50 children with ADHD are involved in this study. These children are part of Residential Treatment Centers in US. 10 Residential treatment Centers were visited for the study out which 50 students were selected. Residential Treatment Centers focuses on modifying behavior and treating symptoms of ADHD and/or ODD. (Achenbach, 1994) Residents will be involved in psychiatric evaluation by a physician, individual and group therapy by qualified therapists and behavioral modification programs typically based on a point system.

Independent and dependent variable

The categorical independent manipulated variable for our study will be the treatment in which participants will participate. The control group will receive no treatment, while the experimental group will participate in Child-centered Play Therapy as defined by Landreth, “a dynamic interpersonal relationship between a child (or person of any age) and a therapist trained in play therapy procedures who provides selected play materials and facilitates the development of a safe relationship for the child (or person of any age) to fully express and explore self (feelings, thoughts, experiences, and behaviors) through play, the child's natural medium of communication, for optimal growth and development.” (Schaefer, 2003)

Our dependent variable will be the core symptoms of ADHD, which include anxiety, self-control or aggression, and hyperactivity. (Achenbach, 2003)

Instrumentation

The instruments we will use will be the Child Behavior Checklist, the Scales for Diagnosing Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Anxiety Scales for Children and Adults to measure anxiety level (Anxiety Scales for Children and Adults, 1993), and the Achenbach System of Empirically Based Assessment to measure self-control (T. M. Achenbach et al., 2003). To analyze the data, we will use a 1-way ANOVA to determine the effectiveness of the treatment and reject or not reject our null hypothesis.

Research Design

The research is based on quantitative research study. Quantitative research is research involving the use of structured questions where the response options have been predetermined and a large number of respondents is involved. By definition, measurement must be objective, quantitative and statistically valid. Simply put, it's about numbers, objective hard data. A scientifically calculated sample of people from a population is asked a set of questions on a survey to determine the frequency and percentage of their responses. For example: 240 people, 79%, of a sample population, said they are more confident of their personal future today than they were a year ago. Because the sample size is statistically valid, the 79% finding can be projected to the entire population from which the sample was selected. Simply put, this is quantitative research.
