Session 1: The Research Summary

The selected research is “Relevance Of Non-Human Animal Studies To The Understanding Of Human Sexuality” by Anders Ågmo, and Ellinor Ellingsen, conducted in 2003.

According to the research, there are quite a few causes for researching animals sexual behavior. Important among these is possibly the use of sexual behavior as a copy system for examining actions of hormone on the brain. In this sort of research, Lordosis behavior in the female rat has often been employed as the behavioral end-point. Lately, the mouse has turn out to be a widely accepted subject due to the accessibility of progesterone receptors or strains lacking estrogen. Sexual behavior of animal is also researched by agricultural scientists by researchers, and by the people involved in wildlife resources management. (Ågmo, 2003)

Session 2: The Ethical Summary

For any individual researcher, research ethics most often concerns the practical-level 'line drawing' between 'right' and 'wrong', but this line drawing is strongly embedded in the ways 'right' and 'wrong' in general can and should be defined in society.

Research often concerns very complex issues and concern over using human beings and animals as research objects. Science seems to be slowly becoming more compassionate. As more types of animals are found to have astoundingly good memories, various types of intelligence, and emotions that humans find quite familiar, an increasing number of scientists are searching for methods to avoid animal testing without putting humans at risk. These methods include computer models or the avoidance of projects that would require the use of animals beyond stealthy observation. Most social science researchers never have to decide on whether to use animals for test subjects and never have to sacrifice other living beings as part of how they make a living. Most, but not all.
