Renfrey Memorial Hospital

Introduction

Renfrey Memorial Hospital (RMH) has been in the region for over 32 years. It has 200 beds and derives its name from Mr. Gilbert H. Renfrey, a popular philanthropist from the area who made a lot of monetary contributions to projects around the area of the hospital. This hospital is the only one in the area that provides round the clock care and has extends hours of its care clinic for emergency cases. Currently RMH is facing problems with retaining its hospital staff which according (Woods, D. 2009) happens if the workplace is dysfunctional or if retirements are coming up. Even though United States has more physicians and nurses now than before, they are aging. To prevent a mass departure of the nurses who are old, from this profession experts are now looking for innovative way to keep these nurses (Larson, J, 2009).

In 2006 the average age of nurses was 48 years and 45% of the nurses employed were on average 50 years old (Bolton-Burnes, L. 2007). According to these facts one can safely assume that 50% of the nurse population will retire by the year 2020. To retain the nurses, the board of RMH has to make a few changes and give them incentives to stay.

The challenge for healthcare systems and hospitals is to maintain their standard of hospitals and care while being financially responsible at the same time as there are various issues they are being affected by, Staffing being the most prevalent one.

Issues Older Nurses Have to Face

Theolder nurses, half of whom are nearing 50 years cannot keep up with the demands of the hospital for them to work in shifts, at times more than one. The ratio of patient and nurse is not balanced as too many patients are under each nurse's care. For the nurses a regular day at work follows high levels of mental and physical exhaustion. Nurses see that there is no growth in this profession as they have been experiencing the flat wage system for their whole span of career while is not motivating as they receive no award for the years they have put in.
