An Oriental form of “laying-on-of-hands” is the alternative “touch” therapy practice of Reiki. Originally practiced in Tibet, it was reworked in Japan beginning in the 19th century. Its philosophy is that illness is caused by energy blockages in the body (Salkind, 2006). The healer uses his hands to draw energy from the universe. Acting as a channel, the healer's hands move over the body of the patient without touching it. The nadis (energy channels) are dissolved, allowing energy to flow into the body of the patient.
