Recreation is any pleasurable activity that is freely chosen. It is an activity that diverts, amuses, or stimulates. It is an activity that refreshes and recreates, that renews health and spirits by enjoyment and relaxation. Recreation can be done alone or with others, it can be active or passive, and it can be artistic or athletic. Recreation has both intrinsic and extrinsic benefits. (Lane, 2002)
Recreation is an important part of life for all people. It is a powerful force in people's lives. Recreation makes people feel good about them and helps people to stay socially connected to other people. Recreation is revitalizing and rejuvenating. Research shows that higher levels of involvement in recreation activities are associated with increased ratings of wellbeing and life satisfaction. Yet, people with disabilities are often less involved in recreation. Some people with disabilities do not have access because of a lack of exposure to and training in recreation settings. There are myriad reasons, but the fact remains that people with disabilities are involved in recreation less than their typical peers. (Lane, 2002)

Daily exercise could alleviate the stress that accompanied prisoners' separation from home. Prisoners who neglected a personal commitment to exercise and physical fitness are observed, did so at their own peril. (Austin, 2009)
Prisoners, who exercised daily, have been observed and experienced, less vulnerable to the deterioration of body, mind, and spirit. Living in prison for months, years, or decades could lead to mental health complications. While the prisoner served time, stretches of dark thought could torment him as life went on for his family and friends without him. Severe depression could lead to mental misery, with suicide seeming the only apparent solution. Those prisoners who made exercise a priority of their adjustment empowered themselves to triumph over mental torment. (Caillois, 2001)
