Introduction

The idea of race, specifically the human races, has a different understanding throughout history. From classical thought which despised all races other than the "race" white, to more contemporary thinking. Other topics addressed in the story include gold mining in South Africa, coal dumps, and the way that AIDS has affected African society. Reviewers predominantly applauded the collection as an important work by an important writer, and that at its best; Gordimer's writing is both consummately artful and deeply engaged. Gordimer's writing reveals the power of engagement and her work is engaged in the broad and humane sense in which she defined it as mainly Gordimer the public figure whose voice we hear for the race and ethnicity issues that also gets covered in Country lovers (Trump, 1986).
