Employability Skills Summaries contain general information about industry context which is further explained as measurable outcomes of performance in the units of competency in each qualification.

The detail in each Employability Skills Summary will vary depending on the range of job roles covered by the qualification in question.

Employability Skills Summaries are not exhaustive lists of qualification requirements or checklists of performance (which are separate assessment tools that should be designed by trainers and assessors after analysis at the unit level).

Employability Skills Summaries contain information that may also assist in building learners' understanding of industry and workplace expectations.

Employability Skills in units of competency

The detail and application of Employability Skills facets will vary according to the job-role requirements of each industry. In developing courses and qualifications, industry stakeholders should be consulted to identify appropriate facets of Employability Skills which are incorporated into the relevant units of competency and qualifications. (Munter, 2006)

Employability Skills are not a discrete requirement contained in units of competency (as was the case with Key Competencies). Employability Skills are specifically expressed in the context of the work outcomes described in units of competency and will appear in elements, performance criteria, range statements and evidence guides.

While specific knowledge and technical skills gained from formal education or on-the-job training have always been necessary for work, generic or transferable skills are at least as important today as technical expertise. This has broadened the skill sets that employers expect, increasing the demand for more well-rounded workers.

The increased requirements for mathematics, computer and communications skills, the shifting of responsibility to the average worker to manage her/himself, make decisions and communicate directly with customers has led to the development of a new category of skills that most workers will need to develop to remain part of a very mobile, technically advanced work force.
