The concept of a center of gravity being fundamental to the conduct of operations is not new, and can be traced back to Sun Tzu in his book “The Art of War”. Centuries later both Carl Von Clausewitz (in “On War”) and Jomini (also “The Art of War) further developed the concept in their equally familiar writings. The similarities between Jomini and Clausewitz render comparison between these two as unnecessary, at least with respect to centers of gravity.
