What is a quantum leap?

In physics, a quantum leap or quantum jump can be defined as a change of an electron from one quantum state to another within an atom. It seems to be irregular; the electron "jumps" from one energy level to another very rapidly, after existing for a short time in a state of superposition. The time this takes relates to the force broadening of spectral lines. The phenomenon contravenes classical theories, which wait for energy levels to be continuous.
