Qualitative Research

Assignment 1

Discussion

A common feature of qualitative projects is that they aim to create understanding from data as analysis proceeds. This means that research design of the qualitative study differs from that of the study that starts with an understanding to be tested, where often hypothesis literally dictates form, quantity, and scope of required data (Creswell 2007).

Whatever study and whatever method, indications of form, quantity, and scope must be obtained from question, from chosen method, from selected topic and goals, and also, in an ongoing process, from data. Thus research design is both challenging and essential, yet it is least discussed and least adequately critiqued component of many qualitative projects(Creswell 2007).

Therefore we start this chapter by looking first at levels of design and then at goals of designing to specify ultimate scope of the project and type of data required. We end with practical advice on how you can tackle ongoing tasks of designing your project so that you develop the research topic into the researchable question; we discuss different levels and ways of planning, and pacing of project as the whole.

Qualitative Research

If you look again at two major scientific methods (exploratory and confirmatory) and five major objectives of science (in chapter one) you will notice importance of theory generation and exploration. In qualitative research, cases can be selected purposefully, according to whether or not they typify certain characteristics or contextual locations.(Creswell 2007)
