Qualitative Research Methods

The study incorporated a quasi-experimental conceive with two study conditions (the jigsaw approach and the drama approach) and one control group (a customary teacher-led whole-class approach). A pre-test, post-test, re-test design with instructional condition as the independent variable, and with reading achievement and students' learning experience variables of Hispanic language as dependent measures was implemented. Corresponding pre-test assesses were utilised as covariates.

Participants and design

The assemblies comprised normal school classes, selected on the basis of comparable scholars, teachers and school settings. The participants were 279 Grade 5 California students learning Hispanic language (141 boys and 138 girls, mean age=10.69 years) in nine classes from three primary schools, with approximately 30-35 students in each class. The three primary schools were located in an urban area of California, and most students came from lower-class families. In most California primary schools, the medium of instruction language is English except for when any other language is the subject. The mother tongue of most students at the three primary schools is English. All student participants in the current study were Americans and their first language was English. As the children mostly came from lower-class families, they seldom had a chance to talk and try English in their every day life.

The three classes in each school were randomly assigned to the two study situation: (1) a direct-instruction approach integrated with jigsaw assemblies (44 young men and 50 young women, signify age=10.73 years); and (2) a direct-instruction approach integrated with drama undertakings (54 young men and 45 young women, signify age=10.69 years).
