A Critical Reflection on Pedagogy and Practice in Learning and Teaching during My Journey towards Achieving Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)

Introduction

Our society believes that children are our future; songs are written about it, politicians expound upon it, corporations use it as a slogan so that consumers will buy their products, and all parents know it in their hearts. This strong belief is usually followed with the statement, to get a good job you need to get a good education. That good education begins at an early age in Kindergarten for most students enrolled in the public school system.

Building administrators have long understood that teachers are the cornerstones of the educational system. According to Certo et al. (2002) who writes for the Educational Trust, several recent large-scale studies have concluded that the most significant factor in student achievement is the teacher. Savvy parents also believe that the teacher makes the difference as they have been requesting specific teachers for years, based upon their perceptions of who is a “good” teacher. The review of the literature includes the research perspectives of several areas; historical, legislative, teacher quality, effective teaching and labour unions.

In this essay, I will be discussing about the Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and how have I achieved the qualified teaching status. In addition, I will be discussing my experience with my students that how I make them learn, write, and read through different activities. Further, my experience will be discussed with the examples of behaviour management of students and promoting positive achievements to motivate them.

QTS

Qualified teacher status (QTS) is the basic requirement for qualification as a teacher in England. In order to achieve QTS, you need to show through practice and theoretical knowledge that you have achieved all the QTS standards. Qualified Teaching Status is the indicator of a highly qualified teacher having a bachelor degree, a full state certification and a major in the teacher's main assignment teacher teaches (Brunetti 2001: pp. 49-74).

Each country sets their own certification requirements, which means that these requirements vary from nation to nation. For our nation to consistently reach the goal of having a highly qualified teacher in every classroom, it may be appropriate to set a national set of certification requirements (Darling-Hammond et al. 2001: pp. 57-77). While, education level and certification are two of the main components of the definition of a highly qualified teacher, educational research indicates that there are more characteristics which must be considered. All of the added requirements relate to rigorous subject matter preparation either through performance on a state test, or by completing an advanced degree endorsed by the state.
