Thesis Statement

My paper will focus on psychiatric theories. I will explain who Sigmund Freud is and how he relates to psychiatric theories. I will also explain what neurosis, psychosis, schizophrenia, and paranoid schizophrenia are. I will conduct my research by going to the library and looking for books related to my topic, and I will use the internet to find creditable sources.

Psychiatric Theories

Psychiatry is a filed in medical science which deals with the study, diagnosis and cure of mental disorders. These illnesses comprise of different behavioral, perceptual and cognitive abnormalities. With the passage of time psychiatric theories have changed, as the medical science has advanced and the approach towards humanity has also seen changes over the last so many years(Cherry.K (n.d.).Psychiatric theories can be classified according to the particular phenomenon they are addressing. Some of the essential types of psychiatric theories deal with the ways the human mind are supposed to perform.

It is quite possible to consider human behavior in several different ways, as is shown by a lot of psychiatric theories across the globe in many cultures. With the help of technology we can not only measure the results of different processes taking place in the brain but also the actual process itself. This type of investigation has lead the psychiatrists to a new dimension of psychiatric theories that observe at how the brain really works and what those processes have to do with human behavior.

Sigmund Freud and Psychiatry

Sigmund Freud born in 1856 was one of the first scientists who made serious attempts in the field of studying the human brain. The theories given by Freud have a great influence on many aspects of the today's life. Freud is also called the father of psychotherapy which deals with the treatment of mental illnesses. The human brain is a database of our thoughts and activities that make us think, act, feel and reason (Cherry.K (n.d.). Freud used to be deeply involved with patients to search in depth the causes of mental and emotional issues. He often used to put patients to sleep i.e. hypnotize them but he found that the effects were temporary. Sigmund Freud gave the idea that the human mind was distributed into three areas: id, ego and superego. 

According to this theory, id gives us the drive for feelings which need immediate fulfillment of wishes, ego gives the instant reaction to the occurrences of reality, and it maintains a balance between id and the superego. Whereas the superego is reigned by the morals we learn from our parents and culture, it keeps id under control. Freud's theories created a revolution in the field of mind science. A few groups of people must have accepted them and few must have rejected them but no one can deny his great input in the science of mental health (Westen 1998).
