Recession is defined as a business cycle contraction in economics, or it may be defined as slowing down of economic activity that lead towards falling of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of a country (Duffy and Stafford, 2009, pp.5). It can be argued that UK has faced a deep economic recession period in the history, as well as, in the present year. During 2008, the number of people began to rise that started losing jobs and claimed the Jobseekers Allowance. Moreover, in 2008, other indicators of UK labor market also began to get worse (ONS, 2009, pp. n.d). However, the degree of worklessness and unemployment was not evenly distributed across the population of UK (Muriel and Sibieta, 2009, pp. n.d). Evidence from prior recessions suggest that, the earlier recessions had worst effects on the social groups including the low-educated, young people, and low-skilled people living in deprived areas of the U.K (Muriel and Sibieta, 2009, pp. n.d). However, the paper will explore the recession and its impacts on KFC, by discussing the effects of recession on UK, in general, and also by exploring the effects of change in eating-out attitudes of people due to current recession. It can also be argued that recession plays a significant role in creating Britain as a fast-food nation because of reasonable prices offered by KFC in the times of recession (The Telegraph, 2009, pp. n.d).
Purpose of the Study
The major purpose of the study is to explore the recession and its impacts on KFC. Additionally, the study will also explore the effects of recession on UK, in general, and also the effects of change in eating-out attitudes of people due to current recession. Therefore, the results of the study will help in finding ways to create a link between recession and the impacts of recession on KFC. It will also help in learning the lessons about how KFC has progressed in the times of recession in UK.
Significance of the Study
According to the UK Office for National Statistics (ONS), the economy of UK observed the third successive quarter of negative economic growth in the first three months of 2012 (Stevens, 2012, pp. n.d). There could be various factors that are negatively affecting the economy of UK. Therefore, the study is fo great significance as it will help in understanding and learning the lessons about how KFC has progressed in the times of recession in UK. The study will be equally beneficial for the stakeholders, business owners, and society as a whole as it will help the stakeholders, policy makers and other concerned authorities in developing effective strategies to mitigate the negative impact of recession in ...
