Piriformis Syndrome

CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

Outline of the Study

This study will be based on the topic “Piriformis syndrome”. The first chapter will provide an introduction to the topic including the purpose and significance of the study. The second chapter will present a review of relevant literature, highlighting the previous research carried out in this field.

Background of the research

Piriformis syndrome is caused by the complexity in the sciatic nerve. This nerve exits from behind the pelvis below a muscle named as piriformis muscle which lies deep in the buttocks. In some cases, the nerve passes through the piriformis muscle. Due to movement and some situations the piriformis muscle can cause can entrapment of the sciatic nerve. This entrapment results in the pain caused in the back of thighs and knees. This pain can further move forward till the sole of the feet.

Pain in the buttock, radiating down the leg, commonly called sciatica . Most often, the cause of sciatica is irritation of the spinal nerves in the spine. Sometimes the effect is observed on the nerves located along the spinal column below the feet. One possible reason could be piriformis syndrome. Piriformis syndrome can be quite painful, but it usually does not pose a great danger and rarely leads to the need for surgery. In most cases, this syndrome can be cured with conservative treatment

Problem Statement

There are less research and studies that are related to piriformis syndrome. The reason behind it is that there are not much patients being diagnosed with this syndrome and the treatment related to it is not being done at a high level. Due to this reason many cases come back complaining about the problems related to piriformis syndrome. More research and observations are to be made to enhcace the knowledge of piriformis syndrome and propose better ways of treatment which can be satisfactory for the patients suffering from piriformis syndrome

Aims and Objectives

The main aims and objectives of this study will be:

To explore the concept of piriformis syndrome

To analyze different causes of piriformis syndrome

To find out the relationship between the piriformis syndrome and sciatic nerve, and

To figure out better treatment and therapies of patients with piriformis syndrome.

Research Question

What is the relationship between piriformis syndrome and sciatic nerve?

How treatment and therapies can help patients suffering with piriformis syndrome?

CHAPTER 2: LITERATURE REVIEW

Definition

Piriformis syndrome is an abnormal condition of the piriformis muscle distinguished by signs and symptoms that are related to the sciatic nerve entrapment at the greater sciatic notch. This is a rare and disputed entity and the valid diagnosis of it has become less common and generally is known only after other foundation of sciatica has been excluded.

It is commonly known that there are anatomical differentiations in the relationship between the sciatic nerve and piriformis muscle.

Spinal nerves go in the lumbar spine and come out of them, combining form the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve leaves the pelvis through the greater sciatic foramen. Piriformis muscle begins inside the pelvis. It is attached to the sacrum located between the bones of the pelvis and the base of ...
