The prophets talked in three time frames. There own time, the near future and the far future, which would encompass the 1st approaching and the 2nd approaching of Christ. The check of a prophet was his beside prophesies which would be fulfilled in his own lifetime. There are distinct types of prophecy in Scripture. (1) Predictive - foretelling the future, and (2) Didactic - considering with lesson, ethical or theological truths.
