Program Approaches in Early Education

Introduction

Early education is taking care and imparting formal education to young children by generally those who are not family members. In general, early education is described as education imparted before five years of age or according to NAEYC, before eight years. In US, primary education is commonly known as elementary education, which is compulsory and is preceded by nursery schooling. Besides US, in most developed countries to receive primary education is compulsory since it lays the foundation of essential numeracy and literacy as well as understandability of basic math, science, geography, history and social sciences (Sloan, 1997).

In this paper the objective is to compare and contrast 2 different programs or approaches in early education in 20th century and how does these approaches include family and the surrounding community into its net. For this purpose two books have been referred first of, Anti-Bias Curriculum: Tools for empowering young children by Sparks and second by DEC Recommended Practices in Early Intervention/Early Childhood Special Education by Sandall, McLean & Smith (Sandall, McLean & Smith, 2000).

Anti- Bias Curriculum

Most children are sensitive to color, gender, language and differences in physical ability are linked with dominance and privilege. Children therefore are ultimately harmed as they might for e.g. think of others as inferior in race etc. This is why people especially parents who raise children should -be cautious of their actions since it is these actions that young children take into account and will associate these attributes to other people surrounding their environment. Anti-bias identity and attitudes, can be taught to younger children through programs as mentioned in the book like role playing Rosa Parks (Montgomery and bus story) which indicates that skin color is not a differentiation factor between two people.
