Self-Esteem is Very Important in Language Learning

Teachers can help in directing students' self-esteem in classroom from a nonproductive focus to a productive state of mind. Furthermore, self-esteem can help students to comprehend learning tasks, which they previously found challenging. However, teachers need to realize that developing self-esteem in students does not incorporate empty praise. Such misconceptions develop unwanted expectations, and incorrect idea of reality. Therefore, teachers in a language learning classroom need to ensure that students feel relaxed and calm. These factors help in developing confidence among students, which also comes from competence. The purpose of self-esteem does not involve the development of false beliefs to replace those which are negative. Instead, self-esteem acts as a force which helps students to reach their full potential in a language learning setting. In addition, it helps in the reduction of negative thoughts, which prevent students from learning, and create doubts on their worth and abilities (Branden 1994, Pp. 102).

In other words, human beings need self-esteem, which acts as a driving force. At times, students have low self-esteem due to which, their psychological homeostasis become unbalanced. This causes them to develop fear, anxiety, insecurity, and social distance. With respect to language learning, low self-esteem is distant from a clinical phenomenon. Therefore, such a state may result in serious implications. The absence or low level of self-esteem may result in preventing students from learning as they shy away from acquiring competence in the target language. As a result, students may develop a sense of insecurity, and even end up dropping out of the class. Therefore, it is essential for teachers in a language learning classroom to take these factors into consideration. Teachers need to care about learners and their self-esteem. On the other hand, teachers need to incorporate activities other than occasional ones, to make students feel worthy and competent. Therefore, teachers need to have awareness about their own self-esteem. This will help teachers to develop an understanding about self-esteem, and its sources. Furthermore, teachers will be able to implement the strategies in the language classroom (Lerner 1996, Pp. 9).

It is essential for teachers to make students feel easy and calm in the learning environment. This will help them from getting rid of negative beliefs which can prevent them from learning. There may be instances where students heard that English language is difficult to learn before they join classrooms, or they may feel panic about the unusual accent.

Absence of Concern for Students and Self-Content

Teachers are facilitators. They are role models for students due to which, it is important for them to look after their students. In addition, it is essential for teachers to ensure that their students are happy and satisfied. The absence of self-content may result in dissatisfaction and inability to transfer a positive vibe to students. As a result, the sense of self-content, happiness, and satisfaction at the teacher's end help in creating the same in students (Tardy ...
