A study was conducted which involved feeding monkeys with diet having the same level of trans fats which are consumed by a normal person through regular consumption of fast food. Both forms of the diets consisted of approximately the same amount of calories. After more than 5 years, the results concluded that the Trans fat fed monkeys used in the experiment had gained abdominal fat equaled to 7.2% of their original weight; where as the unsaturated fat group had gained only 1.8%. In the former case, the monkeys indicated signs which eventually lead to diabetes.
The American food industry is not operated by nutritionists; rather 80% of the industry is under the control of few large corporations which are powerful and pockets full of lawyers. The quality of food, how the food is processed and reach famous restaurants and market place has been the conflicting issue as such food results in misery, fatality and illness. Generating huge profits by such corporations without any concern for the health of families and others has always been an ethical issue. The modern food industry does not want to disclose its secrets because of the ugly truth. Corporations, especially the public related companies show their profit statements after every 90 days, which means selling more food, faster. It is because of this reason that corporations seek for efficiency and greater margins at the expense of consumer health and the well being of the environment. The unethical food processes have to be changed and corporations involved have to become answerable for the quality of food they produce and sell. There is an outbreak of obesity in America.
