Speech: Punishment in the Form of Imprisonment Provides Positive Benefits to both Prisoners and the Community

Introduction

The paper represents a speech on the benefits of prison punishment to the prisoners and society. Punishment has always been perceived as a rigorous process; however there are many positive affects that it brings to the community and the wrongdoers. All these benefits are summarized in this paper.

The Arguments

The punishment effectiveness relates to how much it successful in suppressing the undesired behaviour is (Einstadter, Henry, 45). The effectiveness is increased by the frequency of counselling, immediacy of application, and the punishment used in relation with the positive reinforcement of pro social behaviour. During the incarceration process, the prisoners realize the true worth of family and social life (Raphael, 230). They may even become religious and recall all the violence and wrongdoing that they have conducted formerly. It is also possible that the true sense of citizenship and responsibility is realized during the rehabilitation phase of imprisonment (BJS, 30).One of the justifications of this concept is that the prisons go for curing the criminals behavioural discrepancies, and the role of prison in doing this has been encouraging. Although the concept of prison may sound brutal and violent, but in a genuine sense, the prisons are effective in bringing the behavioural changes among the prisoners (Braswell, 10).
