Introduction

SWOT is an abbreviation of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threat. It is one of the common practices followed by organizations ranged from small to multinational (MNC) companies. SWOT is a strategic approach employed to assess that involve in a business venture or project. SWOT involves indicating the purpose of the business project or venture and the external and internal factors that are unfavorable and favorable to meet that goal.

The strengths are those business characteristics, or team of a project that provide it competitive edge over competitors; weaknesses also refers to limitations and are those characteristics of business that emerge as a disadvantage relative over others; opportunities are chances emerge from external market or as a result of external forces that eventually become a cause for organization; and threats are also external environmental elements that probably cause difficulty and problem for the project or business.

David Hussey in the paper “Company analysis: determining strategic capability” presented an approach of corporate process of appraisal. The paper addresses the assessment of financial performance, appraising production, evaluation of information systems, human resource management, industry analysis, the marketing audit, auditing technology and innovation, taking a process view, and core competencies.

Hussey also exhibits corporate strengths and weaknesses were viewed as a decisive step in the early writing on strategy. In his view, it revolves around capability profiles, the external and internal appraisal, and the search for synergy. Hussey expanded the strategic management knowledge, as well as the techniques and methods available have enhanced, and have a propensity to pay no heed to the importance of assessing the organization.

Discussion

It is critical for the organization to employ analysis of a company in order to gain an understanding of their enabling and limiting strategic capabilities and factors. Profits can then be exploited by choosing the most effective strategies and through divesting opportunities and successful implementation of acquisition and mergers.

In this paper, Hussey expands the traditional discussion of SWOT analysis and provides an approach that is more objective step-by-step in order to appraise an organization. This significant task was evidently explained coupled with appropriate information showed in critical questions checklists and diagrams provided. Additionally, paper also examined functional areas of management and corporate-wide approaches including the value chain, core competencies, industry analysis and, critical success factors.
