In freight distribution modes, ports offer maritime transportation mean of import and export of goods. Ports are equipped with different services to ships and also facilitate merchandises and warehouses for inland distribution. After the terrorist attack of September 11, 2001, the United States is giving more importance towards the securities of ports. The issues regarding the port securities have been identified and the national security departments of ports are formulating strategies for addressing these issues. The United States maritime has 300 rivers and sea ports with more than 3,700 and traveler and consignment terminals.

The major security concerns are the containers that are sensitive for terroristic and other criminal attacks. The purpose of security consideration is the retention of public safety, economical stability, and home land security along with the war against terrorism. The government of the United States is trying to improve the security as, millions of passengers as well as, the containers and other items are entering in the state every year. The ports are the basic route of linking of the United States with the rest of the world. Therefore, ports demand extra security measurements. The major point that is under consideration is the developing of the port security management systems that is not only effective but also economically cheap and stable.

The United States government and the security analyzers are concerned about the maritime security. It might be a chance that terrorists and criminal groups could use sea ports for their illegal activities like smuggling of people, drugs, mass destruction weapons and hazardous chemicals in the United States and could play with the national security of the country. Another, issue of concern for them are the cargo and cruise ships that are also sensitive in terms of terrorist attacks and other deadly encounters.
