Introduction

Democracy is practiced in most parts of the world, but in the recent past, there has been an increase in debate on the issue if it is the best form of government or not. Various countries practice democracy including America, England and India. Democratic form of government calls for an elected form of government, in which representation is given to different regions of a country. Proponents of Democracy claim that it gives equal rights to the citizens of a country and bring economic prosperity and development.

In recent years, there has been an increase in social disparities, unemployment and poverty, which has led to a debate whether Democracy is the best form of government or not.

Thesis Statement

Winston Churchill once said, “It has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried”. I agree with this statement.

Defenders of the democratic form of government say that democracy is the basis of equality in a nation. In contrary to the claim, studies show that democracy is a cause of huge social divisions and discriminations among nations. It is also a major cause of unemployment and poverty in various parts of the world.

Explanation

Democracy has been a major cause of social division and discrimination with different nations. It creates a huge gap between the rich and the poor people and is a discriminating form of government on the basis of color, race, sex and religion. Although countries worldwide stress the role of democracy and importance, but studies show contradictory results. It has not only created disparities among nations but has also led to poverty and unemployment in the economy. Religious identification is based on the birth of an individual within a particular family, but in some parts of the world, it is a matter of choice to go for any specific religion (Glazer, pp. 5-19).

A liberally democratic government and state calls for equality without any discrimination to race, sex and religion. Following this belief, even a democratic government gets away from the track as they start demanding protection for their religion and culture in a way that is contrary to the rules of equality. For examples, Americans are very concerned of the fact that non Americans come to reside in America, and this migration may make an impact their customs and traditions.

Thomas Jefferson, the third American president, was also against the democratic form of government, he once stated “A democracy is nothing more than mob rule, where fifty-one percent of the people may take away the rights of the other forty-nine” (Glazer, pp. 5-19).

Apart from various aspects discussed above, statistical results from various studies have shown results against democratic form of government. Though it is important to study and interpret the results of the study. These studies are done on different countries, and the implication of democratic government would be different.
