Background/Policy Implications: The Department of Public Works transmits for your consideration a recommendation for approval from the Environmental Concerns Committee regarding a proposed policy memorandum to establish a Sustainability Award Program.

Background: The Environmental Concerns Committee has been discussing ways to promote sustainable practices for property construction, operation and maintenance, as part of the Village's Sustainability Framework. The Committee desires to publicly recognize individuals, businesses, and organizations that have gone above and beyond typical standards in the interest of sustainability. Per the Sustainability Framework, such actions can be in the areas of air quality, greenhouse gas reductions, water quality & conservation, transportation, land use, waste diversion and energy use. The Committee will accept nominations throughout the year and will typically award not more than one in any year. It is understood that some years will have no awards. The award will consist of a framed certificate to be awarded by the Village President. There is no monetary award. Therefore, the total cost of this program will normally range from $0 to $50 per year. The cost would be funded by Community Recycling Office Supplies account no.2790.733140.

RecommendationThe Environmental Concerns Committee has voted to recommend that the Village Board approve the attached draft policy memorandum to establish a Sustainability Award Program. The Program would take effect immediately.

I. Purpose The purpose of the Sustainability Award Program is to recognize and promote sustainable construction techniques, building materials, operations procedures, maintenance practices and public education within the Village of Lombard.

II. Procedures/Guidelines A. Nominations may be submitted to the Assistant Director of Public Works by any source for any business, institution or person. B.
