Pursuit Technology in Law Enforcement
Introduction
Police pursuit driving remains a dangerous and controversial action. For generations, the usual police wisdom was that effective law enforcement demanded that officers apprehend suspects, even at great social costs. The tragic accidents that have resulted from these high-speed pursuits testify to their danger. Different technologies have emerged to make these pursuits easier. The devices and gadgets used to stop fleeing vehicles are known as pursuit technology.
These technologies disable the moving vehicle or interfere with the ability of the suspect to operate the said vehicle. These technologies are split up into five categories; electric chemical, mechanical, sensory and cooperative. Mostly mechanical technologies are used to halt the vehicles.
Technologies Used in Police Pursuit
The following technologies are used to aid the police in their pursuits. These technologies are continually updated (Allen, 2002). Latest technologies are also developed to make these pursuits less risky and dangerous for the police officers and other individuals.
Spike Strips
The technology, which is often used, is the retractable spiked barrier strips. This strip is laid on the road. It has multiple spikes attached on it. When a vehicle comes in contact with it, the tires deflate (Allen, 2002). As the pursuit is at high speed, the driver fails to see the strip or is unable to stop or change route in time. As all the tires are deflated and the air starts to escape, the vehicle gradually comes to a controlled halt.
OnStar
This technology helps to track down the fleeing vehicle. It helps to locate a stolen car. OnStar is a vehicle-installed technology that permits the police to track or remotely shut down a vehicle. It permits the police, equipped with tracking devices, to locate stolen vehicles.
Auto Arrestor System
In this technology, a small pulse of electric current is deployed which disrupt the parts of the vehicle's vital electronic parts which are essential to ...
