Introduction

Plagiarism (from Latin plagium, "kidnapping", "Rape of the Soul") is the presentation of foreign intellectual property or of a foreign work as own or as part of the work. This may be an exact copy, a copyrighted work, or the representation of ideas or arguments (www.wlu.edu).

Academia

Many students feel pressured to do their jobs well and quickly and given the accessibility of new technologies (in particular the Internet) they can easily plagiarize by copying and pasting information from other sources. This form of plagiarism is easily detected by teachers for several reasons. First, the selection of the sources of the students is often not very original; teachers can receive the same passage copied from a popular source by many students. Secondly, it is often easy to determine if a student used his own voice. Third, students may choose sources that are inappropriate, inaccurate or off topic. Fourth, teachers may insist that, prior to its review; the works are subject to an online plagiarism detector. There is little academic research on plagiarism in secondary schools. Most investigations focus on plagiarism in the higher level of education.

For teachers and researchers, plagiarism is punished by sanctions ranging from suspension to termination, together with the loss of credibility and integrity. The allegations of plagiarism against students and teachers are often handled by committee's internal discipline.
