Introduction

Critelli had created the Advanced Concepts and Technologies group (AC&T) in about 1996 after becoming CEO of the company. He wanted to provide some separation between the two essential roles in the product innovation process: “On one hand, you need someone to manage the engineering dimensions of the new product development process. And on the other, we needed to have someone constantly looking into the future, scanning the horizon. The two jobs require different skills—so we tapped Jim Euchner to be our futurist, and asked Joseph Wall to run product engineering.”
