THEORIES OF Grandparents raising their child
Introduction
Intergenerational African American families, where the grandmother is the primary caregiver of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, are expanding rapidly in the American society. Over the past decade, researchers and principle manufacturers have shown substantial concern over the increases in grandparent maintained households. This concern has stimulated an expansion of research on grandparent caregiving on a broad variety of issues. Among these are the impact of multiple roles on health, causes for the rapid increase, problems and needs, social structure and expanded family relationships, social support, role satisfaction, the impact of the AIDS and crack-cocaine outbreaks, and emotional/physical well-being (Brown and Monye, l995; Burton, l992; Burton, l996; Burton and Dilworth-Anderson, l991; Caliandro and Hughes, l998; Dilworth-Anderson, l992; Dilworth-Anderson, l994; Emick and Hayslip, l996; Hayslip, Shore, Henderson, & Lambert, l998; Hunter, l997; Jendrek, l 994; Joplin & Brouard, l995; Kivett, l991; Minkler and Roe, ...
