PET OVER POPULATION

Introduction

Greenville society has always been famous for the number of per-lovers it has. Being the only no-kill society for animals, it has always aimed to secure animal rights and attend to the needs of these human companions. This unfortunately leads to Pet overpopulation. This is an increasing menace and a problem that requires immediate attention. Greenville is facing a serious animal overpopulation problem and the primary cause is stray animals. Many animals are abandoned in the street and have to scramble to survive. Each year, about 15 million pets are taken to animal shelters around the country. Only 25 to 30 percent of these animals are returned to be picked up by their owners or adopted into new homes. The rest, about 11 million dogs, cats, and puppies are killed because nobody wants them. This undesirable situation can be easily reduced by neutering the animals and sterilizing them.

Neutering becomes important as stray and attended animals pose threats to animal as well as human population. Anchel Marjorie (1990) holds the view that,” a simple visit to the local vet to have the pet spayed or neutered is the most humane way of preventing this overpopulation (Golden 121). The CSR method can be answer to this particular problem.”

It stands for Capturing, neutering and returning (CSR) which helps to reduce the number of animals. Animals in colonies are brought to the centers, then sterilized and vaccinated. Stray animals or young kittens are removed from the colony and they are placed for adoption. Adult feral animals are marked with ears to need identification and they return to their external environment in which their number gradually decreases naturally. It's very simple. This method interrupts the reproductive cycle and reduces the animal population.

The work is done by volunteers in the Greenville community and the method is convenient and cost-effective as well (Golden 123).
