Every human infant comes into the world devoid of the faculty's characteristic of fully developed human beings. (Central Intelligence Agency, 2009) This does not mean simply the ability to see clearly, to move around, to feed oneself, etc.; above all, it means he is devoid of reasoning power — the power that distinguishes man from animals. However, the crucial distinction between the baby and other animals is that these powers, in particular the ability to reason, are potentially within him. The process of growing up is the process of the development of the child's faculties. From a state of helplessness and incompetence such as few newly born animals are burdened with, the infant grows up to the glory of the full stature of an adult. (Turner, 2005)
In a fundamental sense, in fact, everyone is "self-educated”. A person's environment, physical or social, does not "determine" the ideas and knowledge with which he will emerge as an adult. It is a fundamental fact of human nature that the ideas of a person trained to himself, others can influence them, but no one can determine the absolute ideas and values ??that the individual will adopt or maintain in life. (Ramsawak, 2003)
Some states used to. California, in particular, had free tuition to state universities for their residents that met academic criteria. It boosted the state into the forefront in science, aerospace, and computer technology in particular. When he was governor of California, Ronald Reagan cut the education budget for everything (including K thru 12). He almost completely cut the college and university funding thus eliminating the free tuition program. Several of the other states then had trouble getting such funding thru their legislatures and most if not all programs were killed. BTW, none of the "savings" was passed back to the taxpayers. In addition, the increase of highly trained scientists and technical people increased the tax revenue, covering the cost about a thousand fold. (Statistical Institute of Jamaica, 2009)
I think the country may get more out of offering free higher education then what it costs us. Now day's things that used not require a college degree now require a specialized degree. In addition, the economy changes so fast now that you can get an education in some in-demand field and in 10 years the field is saturated and you can no longer get a job in it. I think that this is the reason why we are seeing so much long-term unemployment.
When you get an education no matter what people say, you are taking a huge risk. My degree from a public university costs $30,000. I know more people with degrees and crappy jobs then I do people with degrees that have good jobs. I have been fortunate enough to get a great job but I would love to go back and ...
