Abstract

This paper will explore many theories including: existential, person-centered and Gestalt that will attempt to shape my own personal theory. This comprehensive theory will address clients' negative behavior to be able to assist them in positive change and spiritual growth. The focus is to understand the framework of psychological theories in order to strengthen the development of a personal theory of counseling. It will also include a Christian viewpoint of ideas and experiences. The goal is to incorporate life experiences with theory building approaches. Utilizing techniques from different perspectives will guide clients to a better understanding and stronger ability to deal with life's challenges.

A Personal Theory in Counseling

This paper talks about development of my personal theory of counseling. It start with a brief overview of the topic than it depicts the understanding of human personality and individual differences. The paper also elaborates Conceptualizing health and wellness and the role of integration and multitasking. The key elements of a comprehensive theory, the process and techniques that guide the therapeutic process, and the demonstration of effectiveness are also discussed in the paper. Finally, it has been discussed that view of psychology, theology, and spirituality and integration of these approaches.

Introduction

As we move from 20th to 21st century there appears to be a general improvement in the standard of living in terms of material comforts all over the world. People in general tend to be seized by the development of new technologies, capitalism, consumerism, and globalization. Individualistic tendencies seem to be replacing collectivism (Wilson, 2001). At the same time, new challenges in moral, spiritual, social, economic, ecological and political spheres have emerged. These developments have also altered the traditional life styles and values. The level of stress and tension experienced by individuals in a changing ethos has increased and people have been seeking ways of coping with them. Value crisis is perceptible in just noticeable differences at the global level as manifested in international conflicts and in racial and communal hatred leading to increased terrorism, aggression and violence all over the world (Hart, 1999).

What is Important for Understanding Human Personality?

In this emerging scenario of conflict, stress, and tension, experts in all fields are looking for new ways of managing the crisis. Social scientists and even some of the physical and natural scientists have also looked into ancient spiritual traditions to seek solace and solutions for contemporary problems. The crux of the point is not altering the external conditions, but bringing change within self and in one's perspective. It is in this global context that spiritual traditions of the east have gained worldwide significance and acceptance as ways of bringing about the change in perspective and as a harbinger of peace (Collins, 2001). The factors involved in personality are:
