Personal Attributes of an Effective Helper

Introduction

World Wars and other major social, political and economical changes all over the globe in last centuries had the most adverse affect on the human psychology; it left the people mentally shattered and unstable. This first requires the need of counseling to deal with these clients, not patients. This required making improvements in the counseling methods and techniques. Carl Roger made special efforts to bring effectiveness in the methods of counseling (Rogers, 2007). The counselor needs to be efficient and active and it is only possible if the personal qualities of counselor serve in the purpose of his profession rather than creating the hindrance in his therapeutic skills (Perez, 1979; Seligman, 1995). This leads toward s the understanding that, to be an effective counselor there is need to have an effective personalities and qualities. In most of the cases it is not possible to have these inherent qualities with fewer pitfalls it is better to learn helping skills and become effective helper (Barz, 2001).

Effective Helper

Becoming an effective helper does not mean that only learning of the helping skills is a solution. Before analyzing others and evaluating others there is need to make an honest self appraisal for ones owns personal attributes. The person who is interested in to become a helper he must possess the basic qualities and personal attributes that can assist in his task. This can be only judged by the honest evaluation of one's personality whether he deserves to help others or if he is the one who needs help.

Honest Self-Appraisal

To conduct an honest self appraisal, the most important task is the evaluation of personal credibility of becoming councilor or helper. There are various other qualities that needed to be judged while conducting the self appraisal like; capacity of patience and tolerance, sense of humor, clarity of thought and mind, ability to think subjectively or objectively, self confidence, self awareness, ability to deal with crises and handling others in state of crisis. It also involves the interest, energy, creativity, intellect, flexibility and above all honesty. Honest Self Appraisal of My Personal Attributes

With the help of overall studies, it is required that I do an honest evaluation of my personality, and justify myself as deserve to be an effective helper.
