Introduction

In the ancient history, the war between the Peloponnesian League led by Sparta and the Delian League led by Athens was written by Thucydides. Thucydides was a general in Peloponnesian war. In 400 BC, the war of Peloponnesian was fought, and the work of Thucydides was one of the earliest and traditional scholarly works (Finley, 1972).

Thucydides opened the book by describing the dispute of territory between Corinth and Corcyra. Sparta was the supporter of Corinth; on the other hand, Corcyra was supported by Athens. The defeat of Corinth was because of the support of Athens for Corcyra. After the defeat, Corinth demanded that Sparta hold the responsibility of Athens for breaking the peace agreement that was signed after the war of Persian. Sparta had the same opinion as Corinth, but before going for the war asked for the support of all allies of Peloponnesian. Thucydides also covered the concise history of just after Persian war. He also covered the aspect that during war, Athens was destroyed, how they managed to prominence rise. Then, Thucydides quickly came back to the decision of going to war by Peloponnesian and at Delphi; Oracle also provided the positive response to commence war. Lastly, narrated Sparta's list of demands that Athenian ultimately, and resulted to war. Thucydides identified the major reason of Athens and Sparta is the knowledge of frugal regarding the Athens increase of power.
