Introduction

The factors in the family environment of adolescent girls and boys affect their mental well being and behaviors. The researchers are focusing on the environment of families and styles of parenting on the behavior and psychology of adolescent girls and boys. The parenting styles adopted by couples or single parents vary depending on the sociological background and other factors of sociology and psychology. Parents want to control their children, but sometimes the control process can go beyond their reach, and it turns into negative direction. Therefore, it is important to understand the different style of parenting and their effect on adolescent boys and girls. This paper discusses the different styles of parenting including permissive, authoritative, uninvolved, and authoritarian. A detailed comparison and contrast of each parenting style is discussed in the paper. It will help in deriving a consensus regarding the best parenting style that should be adopted by parents.

Styles of Parenting

Parenting practices influences the behavior and development of children especially those who are adolescents. The ignorance in parenting practices or styles may lead to unwanted damage to the personality and growth of children. Sometimes it also leads to misbehavior on the part of growing children. Particular parenting actions such as physical or harsh punishments affect the development of child and causes disorders of behaviors in them. On the basis of responsiveness and demand, parenting styles can be categorized into different groups such as permissive, authoritative, uninvolved, and authoritarian parenting styles (Smetana, 1995).

The authoritative style of parenting tends to have a higher demand and responsiveness from their children.
