Abstract
The eighties and nineties saw changes in the way patient care was allocated within the ward teams and how the individuals care was planned. There was an emergence of nurse theorists and many nursing philosophies developed within this time.
There was an emergence of nursing research and a large amount of this examined nursing as a concept and the theory of caring.
Primary nursing took the place of task allocation but was this necessarily the right way to allocate care. Primary nursing is no longer used , neither is task allocation although it is often mentioned as being a better approach from the generation of nurses that were familiar with this method and everything got done. With today's family friendly flexible working Primary nursing would seem inconceivable as more nurses choose to work longer days to allow a work life balance. It also has to be asked, the ward sister knew exactly what was going on with each patient, often now they are expected to run their own team making it difficult to have a complete overview.
This paper provides a historical view of the organisation of nursing care and how this has changed over the eighties and nineties and questions the limited research that led to some of the research but has also led us to be the university educated profession nursing is now.
