Oregon Senators

Introduction

The role of United States Senate is very central and crucial in the American legislative, government and political systems. Congress can control the actions of the President through the budget, approval of which is exclusively a privilege of the legislature. The President, in turn, can "keep" the congress, using the veto (reject) laws enacted by Congress. The Supreme Court, in turn, has the authority to recognize as unconstitutional and null and void laws passed by Congress and approved by the president (Scardino, 2009). Legislative power belongs to the U.S. Congress, which consists of two chambers: the Senate and House of Representatives. The Senate (100 members) is composed of two Senators from each State who are elected by direct vote for a period of six years. In addition, the Senate is also updated after every two years (Scardino, 2009).

Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden are elected as senators of Democratic Party from the state of Oregon. It is important to know that both the senators mainly follow the political agenda of Democratic Party but also present their own plans to better serve their state. This paper aims to examine the rhetorical stances of both the senators in the light of reality.

Healthcare

Jeff Merkley favors his healthcare plan as he believes in providing quality health care to all Oregon residents. Merkley also claims that his healthcare plan is affordable to every state resident. It has been seen that Merkley, as senator, also supports the longstanding democratic dream of universal healthcare plan. It is also important to know that he voted for the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) that allowed his voters to get healthcare benefits. Further, Merkley justifies his healthcare stance and claims that PPACA will not just reduce personal bankruptcy but also improve the insurance system of the country, which can be seen as great assistance to American people in their health care need. In addition, Merkley also takes the Oregon employers on board to provide full healthcare to their employees (Merkley.Senate.Gov, 2012).

Wyden, on the other hand, also believes in better healthcare opportunities and supports the universal healthcare but he emphasizes that it should not be a government's program as it cause increase in taxes. In addition, Wyden also believes that deregulation of private health insurance system will also reduce the costs in healthcare as well as provide healthcare facilities to all people on affordable prices.
