Executive Summary

Unit D of the NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety requires a detailed review of the Health and Safety performance of a work place or organisations and then to produce a justified action plan to improve performance. The selected workplace is a Four Seasons Resort which is located on the 213- hectare domain of an Integrated Resort Scheme known as the Anahita World Class Sanctuary. Prevention of work related injuries, illnesses, and fatalities is important to an organization and should be taken into consideration in design of the management system. Implementing the OHSAS 18001 standard can improve the efficiency and performance of the organization by effectively managing health and safety issues. OHSAS 18001 is the Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Specification published by the British Standards Institute. CSA Z1000 is a similar standard developed by the Canadian Standards Association, and Z10 is the US equivalent. They all are a generalized, comprehensive outline for managing occupational health and safety issues. They offer an effective approach to assess hazards and risks in the workplace and implement preventative measures. (Mandell Bennett Dolin 2010) Benefits of implementing an OH & S management system are significant to the development of an organization. It promotes safe work practices and ensures employee well-being through a proper and an effective management system. With an effective occupational health and safety management system, your company can minimize the risk of accidents, work related injuries and illnesses, which will in return increase your company's productivity and gaining customer's trust. Commitment to occupational health and safety issues also may gain additional benefits such as having lower insurance premiums and eliminating legal costs that may result from occupational incidents.

INTRODUCTION

Occupational health and safety encompasses the social, mental and physical well-being of workers, that is the “whole person”. Successful occupational health and safety practice requires the collaboration and participation of both employers and workers in health and safety programmes, and involves the consideration of issues relating to occupational medicine, industrial hygiene, toxicology, education, engineering safety, ergonomics, psychology, etc. Occupational health issues are often given less attention than occupational safety issues because the former are generally more difficult to confront. However, when health is addressed, so is safety, because a healthy workplace is by definition also a safe workplace. The converse, though, may not be true - a so-called safe workplace is not necessarily also a healthy workplace. The important point is that issues of both health and safety must be addressed in every workplace. By and large, the definition of occupational health and safety given above encompasses both health and safety in their broadest contexts.
