The concept of leadership in nursing is becoming significant by the time as the leadership is critical in managing and motivating the nurse staff in carrying out day to day activities. Keeping in view an ever growing need for leadership development and satisfaction among nurse, the study aims to examine the correlation between nurse staff perception of nurse manager leaderships style. It also examines the influence of leadership on the satisfaction level of nurse staff. To analyze the correlation, the study uses the work index survey to measure the satisfaction level and the multileader questionnaire to assess the leadership styles of nurse managers.

Introduction

Nursing is a discipline of practice and also a political act. The leadership of the nursing profession focuses on critical thinking, action and representation, and it manifests itself in all roles and areas of nursing practice. The nursing leadership plays a pivotal role in immediate life nurses and has an effect on the entire health system and on the population it serves. This is why the health system needs a stable supply of leaders who are visionary nursing and energetic in all areas of the discipline, that are credible, courageous, visible, which are a source of inspiration and have the authority and resources to support a modern practice, innovative and professional nursing. The positive influence of nursing leadership on job satisfaction, retention, and organizational commitment in staff nurses is well-documented (Acree, 2006; Anthony et al., 2005; Chiong Foong Loke, 2001; Failla & Stichler, 2008; Kleinman, 2004; McNeese-Smith, 1997, 1999; Raup, 2008; VanOyen-Force, 2005). Given the significant cost of nurse turnover (estimated between $62,100 and $67,100 per registered nurse), effective leadership is critical to the overall health of any healthcare organization (Jones, 2005).

Evidence also suggests nursing leaders can enhance staff nurse productivity in a number of ways ( Fox, & Wells, 1999; McNeese-Smith, 1997), particularly through their ability to create a productive work environment. Nursing today is an important pillar in the National Health System; Physician work would be incomplete without the presence of staff in this branch. The efficiency of health services depends heavily on the leader's role as administrator of the same.
