Analysis of Nursing Grief for the Patients

Introduction

At times, grief is used interchangeably with the terms bereavement or mourning. However, others try to distinguish between grief and bereavement, usually referring to the death of someone, and mourning, the outward manifestations of sorrow such as crying, lamenting, or wearing black as a sign of the death of a family member or someone you are associated.

Although grief associated with death and other significant losses is a fairly common experience, found amongst nurses, the adjustment to loss can have a range and variety of responses, including both positive and negative responses. Some people are able to adjust to a loss with continued or increased purpose in life and increased functionality in personal relationships and occupation; this is often labeled resiliency. However, for other individuals, grief seems to interfere with family and other relationships, work performance, and personal, mental health. These powerful dysfunctional behaviors are usually temporary but can become long term and therefore, pose serious concerns for individuals adjusting to loss.

However, the grieving factor may contradict on various occasions if we keep in mind that the person who has to face a grieving situation is a nurse. Time to time nurses can have different feelings attach with them in contrast of patient. Nurses are conditioned to an environment where they have to deal with people who are suffering through various types of illness. However, it's their job description that makes them so much strong and don't let them feel grieved. However, the major concerned lies in this whole situation are that will the grieving behavior facilitate them with the job or not. Similarly, on the other hand, will their not so grieving behavior will facilitate in a positive way towards their job or it will not.

Discussion

Grieving behavior may arise in the mind of nurses while serving a patient with their illness. Moreover, such type of scenario may be created if the patient is suffering through an illness that is life-threatening or in a situation if nurse get emotionally attach to a patient as she is serving that patient with a lot of time.
