The structure of a Non-profit organization is similar to that of a corporate business. They have an upper management responsible for the overall strategic direction of the company and carrying out of the mission. The central administration includes the staff that works directly with the community typically consisting of the executive director and office personnel. The programs put in place by the workers are all geared toward a common goal and ultimately are aimed at accomplishing a set goal. For example, The American Red Cross provides the largest supply of blood and blood products to patients in the United States. Organizations of a non-profit structure also have many volunteers from the local community and some even have paid employees on their staff (Pfeffer & Salancik, 2003).

Examples of Non-Profit Organizations

When a person hears the term non-profit organizations the first company that comes to mind is the American Red Cross. Everyone knows they are one of the first to come to the aid of the community during disasters. It was founded in 1881 as the premier emergency response organization in the nation. Since then they have expanded their mission to include society services that assistance the needy, affirm for military associate and their categories, the compilation, dispensation, and division of blood and blood productions, programs that encourage health and safety, and external release and developmental plans. The American Red Cross has many chapters throughout the country that work specifically with their local area to carry out the mission of the entire company. They rely heavily on donations of time, money, and blood.
