Introduction

The purpose of this paper is to enlighten and discuss the non-durable industry according to the standards of S&P. S&P is also known as the standard and poor assessment which provides critical evaluation of the data pertaining to the industry conditions and current situation. The assessment of the data by S&P is comprised of industry growth, trends in the industry, industry evaluation; industry stability, economic conditions of the industry and the factors that affect the growth and stability of the industry (Hoffmann, Henderson, Chaloner, 1955). There are several organizations that are listed by the S&P; these are the organizations on which the S&P conduct its analysis related to the conditions of the industry in which they operate. The non-durable industry selected to be enlightened in this paper is the retailing industry. The purpose of choosing this industry is the increased focus of S&P on the particular industry. Nevertheless, this paper focuses to narrow down the research for the better enlightenment of the data. Hence, the organization named as Mark and Spencer is chosen to be analyzed in this paper. Mark and Spencer is the large retail chain that was established in 1884. This paper will critically discuss the retail industry in which this organization operates and will try to explore the industry condition of the industry according to the S&P standards.

Risk Strategies research group assessment by the S&P is termed as Credit and Risk Strategies (MCRS). This is an independent project of research initiated by Standard & Poor's. The enlightenment of unique financial intelligence is one of the main purposes of this project which is performed by studying the correlations among different classes of assets and the industries (Weiss, 1961). This process is facilitated sophisticated procedures performed by foreign applications to the data and evaluations by S&P. This project allows investment parties and other precious sources that is pertaining the alpha discovery and sophisticated evaluation on the basis of the data accumulated through different sources. The analysis of the data reveals that the intellect series of the industry suggests investment parties sophisticated evaluations of the data and enlighten different industry scenarios that give creative methodologies for leverage and risk assessment (Camfferman, Zeff, 2007).

Background

Marks and Spencer's (M&S) is a high profile British retail brand, operating through department and food stores which was established in 1884 in Leeds. Today the firm has a chain of 670 stores and operates in 40 countries globally, employing 77 864 staff. In 2009, revenue reached £12,876.3 million - 90% of this revenue was generated in the United Kingdom (Source of statistics: Yahoo Finance) (Lindsay, 2009). Industry reports suggest that the M&S' brand and its values is one of the main reasons behind the organization's success. It is considered a captive brand, selling its own products nationally, which are exclusive to the M&S stores.
