Nagi's Model of Disablement

Abstract

In common terms, disability may be defined as the lack of an individual or a person in any specified field to perform some task or action (Barnes, 1997). This paper analyzes the Nagi's model of disablement and its implication on a physical disability. This model will help to develop a systematic framework for the clinical practice in treatment and identification of a disease.

Nagi's Model of Disablement

Thesis statement

Application of the Nagi's Model of Disablement is used as systemic framework in order to identify a physical disability like Osteoarthrosis.

Introduction

Physical therapy deals with the branch of the clinical science that comprises of empirically derived and tested principles. This provides the model of treatment for practices. It also provides the foundation or a system or the framework in order to develop ideas that are basically from foundational sciences. They are further used for deriving the clinical practice guidelines from the symptoms and evidences (Cailliet, 2004).

Discussion

There are two basic models of disablement that are designed and work in accordance with the disability of an individual in order to identify and classify the physical disabilities of a person. These themes are:

1) The Disablement Model developed by Nagi (1965)

2) The International Classification of Impairments, Disabilities and Handicaps (ICIDH) (WHO, 1980). The model chosen here for disablement is The Nagi's Disablement Model. The overview or the brief history of the patient is observed and then further applied to the Disablement Model (Hunter, 2009).

Overview of Patient's History, Systems Review

The patient is an athlete. The patient is suffering from pain since 2 months. Patient is suffering problems in twisting the hands and performing a number of jobs like he is unable to throw ball. Swelling and Stiffness was observed in hand in past two weeks. The patient suffers from severe ache and pain in hand since past few days. The patient is unable to ride bike and perform many other activities. It was decided from the basic symptoms and history that the patient is suffering from Osteoarthritis.

Nagi's model of disablement (1965)

This model of disablement was developed by Saad Nagi, who was a sociologist. He developed this model of disablement in early 1960s for the US Social Security Agency. It developed a way or the systematic framework in order to conceptualize work disability in a better way so that there could be a better scheme programmed for US workers.

The Nagi's model of disablement follows following steps.

Active pathology

Physical impairment

Functional limitations

Disability

Active pathology

The patient is suffering from the severe ache and pain in the hand causing him to suffer from the physical issues and problems in order to handle many things and perform a number of jobs (Erickson, et.al, 2008).

The twist in the hand causes acute pain in the hand as well as at the base of the thumb.

The hand of the patient shows following symptoms

Swelling, Stiffness and pain in the hand of the patient

Bony nodules ...
