Shaping up America's Music

Charles Ives and Aaron Copland were two musicians who have shaped up America's music. They are termed as the Father of American Music. Charles Ives was the first one who wrote music before Aaron Copland started. But Aaron Copland got known first who influenced the American music before people heard Charles Ives.

Personal Backgrounds

Both the musicians has many aspects of their life common but obviously had differences as well. Charles belonged to the England Protestants where as Aaron's parents were Jewish who migrated to Eastern Europe. Ives was encouraged by his father since childhood towards music whereas Copland being the youngest was discouraged to pursue music as his elder siblings took classes but all was in vain.

Growing up, both said that they were isolated which is a common aspect. Both used to spend more time doing music. Charles had isolation throughout his life where as Aaron was always around music and was learning. With time, both became thorough pianists. Both learned the concept of harmony from a German Instructor. Later Charles pursued his studies, left music and entered into the insurance business whereas Aaron continued with his music and quit studies.

Both the musicians had a strong back of the Pianist called John Kirkpatrick. He was a friend of Charles family. After Charles death, Charles music was was catalogued by John.

Charles Ives and Aaron Copland were extremely patriotic which shows why they had patriotic songs made during the time of the first and the Second World War. They had the perception that they produce American Music and refine it to that extent that it out stands the European music. They had this perception since their childhood (www.coplandhouse.org).
