Dr. Sam Sheppard: Guilty or Innocent?



Abstract

This paper discusses the case of Dr. Sam Sheppard. He was convicted of the murder of his wife, Marilyn Sheppard. Marilyn, on the morning of July 4, 1954, was found beaten and cut to death in the upstairs bedroom of their house on the lake in a suburb of Cleveland. Many controversies and arguments involve in this case. Some people believe that Dr. Sheppard was innocent while others believe that the he was guilty. Introduction

Marilyn Sheppard, was the wife of Dr. Samuel Sheppard, and was pregnant when on the morning of July 4, 1954 was beaten and cut to death in the upstairs bedroom of his house on the lake in a suburb of Cleveland. Many people have argued about this case. Some people believe that Dr. Sheppard was innocent while others believe that the he was guilty. This paper discussed the case in the view of five different reviews and offers self opinion whether the doctor was guilty or innocent.

Literature Review

At dawn on July 4, 1954, asleep on a sofa on the ground floor of his luxury villa in Bay Village, suburb of Cleveland, the young surgeon, osteopath Sam Sheppard was suddenly awakened by screams from the room on the first floor where, sleeping was his young wife, Marilyn, four months pregnant. When upon entering the room, he was stunned when he saw an intruder which he later described as "bushy haired man" fighting with his wife. He was immediately hit on his head and fell unconscious. When he regained consciousness, he saw his wife laying half-naked in a pool of blood. He heard a noise on the ground floor and saw the man flee towards the nearby beach on the shores of Lake Erie. He started in pursuit, caught up with him, fought with him, but was again knocked out (Holmes, 1961).

Police in Cuyahoga County did not believe the young notable, rich and arrogant doctor. The handsome doctor, ex-champion of local football, from a family of doctors, came back after his studies in California and moved to Bay Village. In this suburb house on the lake, he gained devout clients due to his modern virtues of osteopathy. He married his wife Marilyn after he graduated. He stared working at a family hospital in Ohio. The marriage of the couple was in trouble due to the infidelities of Dr. Sam. Marilyn knew about his affair with a nurse named Susan Hayes.
