Introduction

The success of the western countries in the contemporary era could be attributed to their ability to incorporate immigrants from different nationalities and culture. In the modern world which essentially operates on the basis of economic stability and social balance, a multi cultural society can provide any country a vast and diversified pool of talents. In the traditional sense the concept of immigration and the formulation of smaller social groups were unappreciated for the native populations. They believed that the concept of multiculturalism would eventually threaten their traditional way of life, and their historical cultural roots could be altered by foreign influences. This is the reason why in the historical perspective the immigration process was greatly limited, and the majority of the immigration only took place in the regional areas, or within the close European countries. However the economic factors, and the need for a more balanced group of population, have allowed the countries to become more accepting to the concept of multi cultural groups within the society (Hoganson, 2002). In the modern era the majority of the European countries has genuinely accepted the concept of multiculturalism, and has established a society based on the cosmopolitan ideals.

The history of America is very different to the majority of the European countries, in its ability to attract a vast group of people belonging to diverse cultural backgrounds. This is the reason why in the contemporary society; America has one of the most diverse and closely integrated societies in the global environment. In fact most of the western countries have been motivated by the successful American model of multiculturalism, to incorporate similar ideals within their national societies. In America the pertinent question regarding the vast number of diverse cultural and ethnic groups has always been regarding their identification and the pride in their national identities. Since the country consists of a vast number of people who have not been born within the country, and might have even spent a considerable amount of time in another country; they might see themselves as citizens of two different nations. The majority of these people however predominantly consider themselves Americans, but to also identify their cultural roots they also incorporate their native countries to their national identities. This is the reason why in the interconnected American society, there exist a number of sub cultural groups such as Latin Americans, African Americans, Puerto Rican Americans, and many more. The multi cultural and unique national identity of the American population has always been appreciated and supported by the national population, however since the country has now moved towards a united nation; the sub cultural groups must define themselves as Americans. The term American itself is comprehensive term, and does not necessarily identifies a certain ethnical or social group. The rich history of the country in regards of its social fabric, it has always welcomed the individuals from various different nationalities; hence once these people successfully incorporate themselves with the national society, they should call themselves ...
