Motivation and Self Regulation in Learning

Introduction

Developing skills and acquiring knowledge are the parts of learning. All learners should own their learning's. Today educating the students teaching them how to learn and act (Codde, 1996; Long, 2001). The aim of higher education is to develop learners in many countries and make them confident and independent. Moreover, universities are playing the vital role in strengthen the concepts of self learning in students. Self direction in learning enables students to do two tasks simultaneously. The first task is to plan, evaluate, observe, and it is the instructional process while the second task is due to the internal characteristics of the learner. Self-regulation is the process along the path to the specific goal. Beside self regulation, motivation is mandatory in order to learn easily.

Self-Regulation Planning

Though motivation is compulsory, but the result of motivation in academic learning is not satisfactory. The motivation in students helps them to act and enable them to take decisions. When any student is busy in the process learning or academic learning and, in such a difficult situation self-regulated learning provide helpful strategies in maintaining their aims (Gollwitzer, 1996). According to research the student who motivates the self-regulation, plan and action can perform much better in his academic career than other students who are weak in self-regulation Pintrich, 2000c; Schunk & Zimmerman, 2003). There are certain assumptions for learning such as one has to be constructive for learning, monitoring own motivation, making comparison of the processes, actual achievement and performance. The students who are self motivated can have major characteristics and major processes to perform. They should believe that they can perform well and should have multiple goals. The students who are self-regulated also believe that they have self observation, self judgment and self reactions (Eccles & Wigfield, 2002). According to observation, repeated failures are due to lack in self-regulation. Self-regulation divided into four major phases which include planning, monitoring, control and reaction. These four phases found in human behavior and every aspect of life.

Life is the name of troubles and the problems chase us. Every work should be self-regulated in order to overcome these problems. The results show that the majority of the problems at the end of the goals are due to lack of self-regulation. Once, one learn to motivate and self-regulate the problems become no problem for him. Hence, clear and targeted self-regulation is necessary to achieve goals. Learning is though a difficult task, but when it is self-regulated then learning become easy and clear.

Self-Monitoring

If any individual is self-regulated, and start his learning with motivation then, self-monitoring becomes important for him. There are combinations of internal and external states of considerate attention. Thoughts, feelings, emotions and depression are part of mental state while movement of body and environment are external states. The combination of internal and external states is attention styles (Singer et al., 1991). These processes help the individual to self-monitor easily.
