Motivating Employees in the Organisation

Introduction

Motivation is the internal condition that activates behaviour and gives it direction; energizes and directs goal-oriented behaviour. The term is used for human motivation but, theoretically, it can be used to describe the causes for animal behaviour, as well. According to various theories, motivation may be rooted in the basic need to minimize physical pain and maximize pleasure, or it may include specific needs such as eating and resting, or a desired object, hobby, goal, state of being, ideal, or it may be attributed to less apparent reasons such as altruism, morality, or avoiding mortality (Lawler et al. 1970: 305).

Discussion

Interview with the Client

We have conducted two to three interview sessions with the client and its staff. We also made a questionnaire that was filled out by the staff of the company in order to come to a conclusion that the company is facing the issue of motivation in employees. The selected company has just suffered the resignation of nine officers and three managers, recruited by a competitor of the company located in the same area. While conducting the interview, the Director of Human Resources Development stated that there is the lack of evidence to understand the cause of the resignation. The other directors said they were very satisfied with their work, the atmosphere in headquarter is quite good, wages are high; however, there is no prominent reason for their resignation. The human resources manager decides to hire an outside firm to investigate the motivation of its staff. However, we convinced them to provide us an opportunity to implement a plan that can be beneficial for their company. Three months later, after multiple interviews with staff and research on the client's company, the consultant presents the results of the study to the Director of Human Resources. Our study and interview with the company staff provided us with an answer to the question that why people are resigning from the company. It was concluded that there is a lack of motivation in employees because of which they are not motivated towards their work. As a result, the company is facing poor performance, and declining sales.

The main cause of people resigning from the company is lack of focus on human resource of the company. The company needs to understand that employees are a major resource of any business; therefore, they need to value the human resource of the company, with which they will be able to regain the lost confidence of employees because of lack of empowerment given to employees these days.
