CHAPTER 01: INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is a standardized program for meditation. The program was created in 1979 in order to develop an integration of the mindfulness meditation of Buddhist and modern psychological and clinical practice. The MBSR program was originated with the purpose of treating chronic pains, and was developed as a group-based program. During the last few years, the popularity of the mindfulness-based Stress Reduction program has increased. It is because the program has been proved effective for a number of physical and mental disorders. The most vital characteristic of MBRS program is the concept of mindfulness. The roots of this concept exist in Buddhism. The concept was first found in the Abhibdamma and later in the Visuddhimagga, a summary of the part that deals with meditation.
The Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction program consists of a particular kind of attention. The program is also characterized by curiosity, openness, and awareness along with an acceptance of present internal and external practices. With the help of this program, the practitioners get the ability to act reflectively than impulsively. There are three techniques that are central to MBSR program including body scan, yoga practice, and sitting meditation. Body scan involves an extensive attention of body from the feet to head. This technique focuses on sensations and feelings in different regions of the body. The adoption of the body scan technique results in increasing awareness and relaxation.
Sitting meditation involves attention on breathing. The technique also involves attention on the rise and fall of the abdomen. This technique also focuses on the awareness of thoughts and distracts that flow continuously through human mind. The technique of Hatha yoga practice involves breathing exercise, body stretching and postures. The aim of this technique is to increase the relaxation of the musculoskeletal system.
Purpose of the Study
The techniques of mindfulness-based stress reduction program are gaining popularity all around the world. The studies conducted on the topic have proved that mindfulness based stress reduction program is effective in overcoming chronic pains, mental illness, depression, and stress. The program is also effective from individuals who are not suffering from any kind of disorder since it reduces the probability of diseases.
