What Role Does Mindfulness Based Approach Play In Pain Management?

Introduction

The "Mindfulness" or "mindfulness" is a method of mental training, which is a form of meditation based on the focusing of attention on the present moment and bodily sensations. An attitude of openness to experience is encouraged. Learning mindfulness training plays a crucial role in pain and stress management. It takes place through a series of practical exercises. For the success of the training, it is very important that participants commit to 40 minutes of daily practice, six days out of 7. Research has demonstrated the effectiveness of this method to deal with various difficulties in life such as depression, chronic pain, and anxiety etc.

Interventions and mindfulness-based therapies are increasingly popular in the world not only as a way of cognitive development, but also as a method of psychotherapy for people with mental and psychosomatic disorders. The resulting effect size indicates a moderate efficacy in improving symptoms of anxiety and depression before and after therapy, both when they are the predominant symptoms (anxiety and depressive disorders), and when they are secondary to the nature of somatic diseases (cancer, stroke, heart disease, arthritis, diabetes, pain syndromes). These effects strongly suggest that mindfulness-based interventions may be a promising method for treatment of depression and anxiety (Heidenreich 2004, pp. 193). There are numerous approaches and interventions for practicing the mindfulness such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT), Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) etc.

Researches show that among the widely practiced technique for stress and pain management around the world is the Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT). This method is used in stress management and relapse prevention, anxiety and depression. So this paper will highlight the principles underlying this technique for the reduction of various stress related disorders. Similarly, the relevant evidence will be discussed which support its practice across the globe.
